René’s name however is spoken more quietly. They call him The King’s Hound. The Winter Fang. The Quiet Death. When the Crown sends soldiers, there may still be room for surrender. When it sends René, people assume the decision has already been made. He rides through the frozen reaches of Aetheria dressed in black, accompanied by enormous black dogs trained to follow him through forest, battlefield, village and snow. They are almost as infamous as their master. Stories say they can find a man beneath fallen timber, follow blood through a blizzard, and wait outside a locked door without making a sound. Most of the stories about René are exaggerated. Unfortunately, enough of them are true. But René was not born The King’s Hound. He was made into him. Long before anyone feared his name, there were two boys: René and his twin brother, Hugo. We go back into their backstory as children and learn how they were taken as children to serve the crown. From an early age, the brothers were taught discipline, obedience, observation, combat and silence. Most importantly, they learned that usefulness was rewarded and keeps them alive. So they became useful. René's strength, intelligence and capacity for violence were refined rather than restrained. Compassion became a liability to conceal. Fear became something to master. Pain became information. Orders became simpler than choices. Eventually the boy disappeared beneath the reputation. Or rather, everyone simply stopped looking for him... “No Witnesses Left Behind” is the second chapter of René's story that follows him during one of the Crown’s merciless campaigns, where his orders leave very little room for interpretation. Villages have been searched. Men have fled. Soldiers have died. Somewhere among the wreckage, however, his dogs discover something they were never sent to find: for anyone else, it would be a simple moment. For René, it is dangerous. Because sometimes all it takes to disturb a lifetime of conditioning is to look at someone small and terrified and remember, however briefly, that you were once small and terrified too. This song is not the story of a hero. It is not even necessarily the story of redemption. It is the story of a man standing somewhere between what was done to him and what he now chooses to do to others. René has committed terrible acts in service to the Crown. His childhood explains the machinery that created him, but it does not erase the people crushed beneath it. A tragic past is not innocence, and suffering does not automatically make someone good. Somewhere beneath the armor, obedience and legend remains a question the Crown would probably prefer he never ask: If they created the King’s Hound... does the Hound still have the power to choose whom he bites? And were he and his brother really told the truth about what actually happened to them as children? ------ About You and This Channel: Whispers of Aetheria was never meant for everyone.
