Description
For years and years, building a Career Mode squad was the easiest thing on Earth. If you ever watched a YouTuber play the game, the chances are they would have 11 good players in their starting team, maybe two or three on the bench, and the rest could just be academy players who were never gonna see the pitch. It didn't matter because they'd still improve anyway and become 99-rated.
But this year, things have changed. You actually do have to build a squad if you want to be successful in Career Mode, and it's also been made way harder to build a good squad. You can't get away with just 11 good players anymore. You need at least 18, and if you build them in the wrong way, then you're gonna have big problems and be in a constant state of rebuild.
It's great, and on paper, it resembles how big-club management actually works in real life. Remember last year when Man City bought Trafford to replace Ederson, let Ortega go for free, and then decided to also sign Donnarumma? Of course, then Trafford was not good enough to replace Donnarumma, so he got sold to Leeds a couple of months ago.
That's how management works in Career Mode this year. You have to think about the signings you make, and you can't really stockpile players on the crucial or important squad role anymore. Players are also really insistent on getting the best possible squad role so they can guarantee minutes, so overall, it has become super difficult to actually build a squad. I've got to say, I absolutely love it.
It's probably easier to show you what I mean rather than try to explain it any more, so let's take over a random team. How about Casa Pia? On a tangent, I'm playing a save with them that I'm loving at the moment. Highly recommend it. Anyway, this is what you face on day one. You have a crucial goalkeeper, then two important goalkeepers. Of course, this is basically impossible to handle in terms of minutes, as each will want loads.
So, you have to make the choice straight away: who are you keeping? Gomes has great potential, which means he can most likely reach 80 overall. Mandic seems decent; he's the tallest, but then Sequeira is the best. This is something that didn't really matter last year, but if you try to handle all three this year, you'll probably end up having to sell all three.
I went into my first saves not really knowing this, and that's exactly what
happened. I was playing it like it was FC25, trying to play my best team whenever I could, not really making subs and not balancing minutes very well. But now, that's so important. So, how do you handle the goalkeeper situation? I'd probably loan out Gomes, play Sequeira and wait for Mandic to revolt. At that point, you just buy a cheap backup until Gomes has overtaken Sequeira.
But then, also in this same team, we have five centre-backs who are all important players. Squad roles are really important to understand this year, and thankfully, Andreas Willstorer has actually posted the percentages you need for each player, at least for crucial players. A crucial player needs 90% of the minutes over the past eight matches.
