Description

In 73 BC about seventy gladiators broke out of a gladiator school in Capua armed with cleavers and spits from a kitchen. Rome trapped them on Vesuvius, so they made ladders out of wild vines, climbed down the cliff and attacked the Romans from behind. Slaves from all over Italy joined Spartacus, and his army beat one Roman army after another. He led them north to the Alps, but his men refused to leave Italy and turned back to plunder it. Rome then sent Marcus Crassus, its richest man, who executed every tenth man of a unit that had fled. Cilician pirates took Spartacus's money and never ferried him to Sicily. In 71 BC he died in the final battle trying to reach Crassus, and his body was never found. Rome crucified 6,000 of his followers along the road from Capua to Rome. Sources: Plutarch, Life of Crassus 8-11; Appian, Civil Wars 1.116-120. #spartacus #rome #history #gladiator #shorts
