Description

I tested Jealous Devil lump charcoal against the 8 brands from my original 9-bag test — and it just became my new number one. Here are the exact numbers. In my original test, Fogo Premium took the overall win and B & B held the value crown. But the comments section would not let me rest until I ran Jealous Devil through the same four-category methodology: bag quality, density, quality control, and cost per usable pound. The results were not close. Jealous Devil finished with 79.4% usable charcoal by weight, beating Blues Hog's 74.4% to take the bag quality title outright. On density, it registered 330 grams per liter — surpassing B & B's previous record of 317. Quality control came back perfect: zero rocks, zero sticks, zero under-carbonized wood, tying Fogo Premium at the top of that category. And at $1.57 per usable pound, it finished second in value, behind only B & B's $1.39. Stack all four categories together and Jealous Devil is the new benchmark for lump charcoal. If you are cooking low-and-slow or running high-heat sears on your Kamado Joe, this is the charcoal I recommend.
