Description

Starbucks and 6 Other UK Coffee Chains Just Got Caught... Everyone Knew Something Was Wrong Most British shoppers assume a coffee shop lunch is a fairly safe choice. A sandwich from a chain you know, a hot drink, and the calories on the board if you want to check. But a sandwich at one of Britain’s most fashionable bakery chains contained more salt than an adult should eat in a whole day, and cafés don’t have to show salt on the menu. Seven of Britain’s best-known coffee chains have been caught out by health charity surveys, BBC tests, a court fine and their own accounts. In this video, we count down seven UK coffee chains and what each one was caught for. That covers the salt in the sandwiches, the sugar in the seasonal drinks, the bacteria in the ice and the tax in the accounts. We also look at the chains that came out well on the same tests. In this video, you’ll discover: The bakery sandwich with more salt than an adult’s daily limit, roughly the same as five cheeseburgers Why calories are on the menu board but salt isn’t What a BBC test found in the ice at three of Britain’s biggest coffee chains Two chicken salad sandwiches from two different shops, one with double the salt of the other The coffee chain whose UK sales grew while it reported a loss and paid no corporation tax for the second year running The festive hot drinks that contained up to 25 teaspoons of sugar The chain at the top of our list that also came out among the best on salt The five-step Coffee Counter Check that takes about ten seconds before you order Every claim in this video is based on published surveys from Action on Salt and Sugar, BBC Watchdog testing, court records, company accounts filed at Companies House, or named sources. At UK Food Exposed, we investigate what British consumers are actually getting for their money, from supermarket shelves to restaurant chains and the heritage brands we grew up trusting.
