Description
In October 1992, police stormed Carandiru prison in São Paulo and killed 111 inmates in a single afternoon. Months later, eight prisoners formed a group in a prison yard after a football match. They called it the Primeiro Comando da Capital.
Today the PCC has an estimated 40,000 members, a written constitution, a membership fee, and a court system that issues death sentences over conference calls. In May 2006 it ordered a coordinated attack that emptied the streets of a city of 20 million people in a single night — buses burned, shops closed, and one of the largest cities on earth simply stopped.
It also became one of the largest suppliers of cocaine entering Europe. The containers arriving in Antwerp and Rotterdam that European police intercept every week increasingly begin at the Port of Santos, controlled by men who have never left their cells.
This is the story of how a massacre created the organisation that now sits at the centre of the world's cocaine trade.
Sources include reporting from Brazilian and European investigative outlets and public court and police records. All footage and images are used for documentary and educational purposes.
