Description
My name is Darlene Hollis. I cooked in a school kitchen for thirty-five years, and we kept four hundred children fed and that kitchen passing health inspection with about three things.
You have a cabinet under your sink with more bottles in it than you can count without kneeling down. A purple one for glass. A yellow one for the kitchen. A blue one for the bathroom. Maybe two for the shower. You buy them because the labels tell you each room needs its own chemistry, and you're doing what you were taught to do. Then the counter's clean and the window still hazes over, and you wonder what you did wrong. You didn't do anything wrong. The method did.
Here's the part nobody tells you. Dirt in a house is mostly the same three things wherever you find it. Grease, hard-water film, and dust stuck to the both of them. Same dirt, different room. The labels are different because the labels are the product. The dirt never got the memo.
White vinegar is about five percent acetic acid. In plain words, a mild acid. Most of the film in a house is the opposite of acid. Hard-water spots, soap scum, the cloudy haze on glass, the crust on a faucet, all of that is mineral left behind when water dries, and a mild acid dissolves mineral the way sweet tea dissolves sugar. Grease breaks up under it too. The head cook who trained me, Miss Doris, kept a jug by the mop sink and said vinegar cuts through what soap slides over. She was righter than she knew. Back in the 1930s the home demonstration agents carried mimeographed circulars to farm wives with vinegar-and-water printed right in them as the standard wash for glass, enamel, and nickel fittings.
The method is four steps and one of them is writing on the bottle. Buy plain distilled white vinegar, two dollars for the small bottle here in Lexington, about three and a half for the gallon, which is the better buy. Get a spray bottle, a dollar and a quarter at the dollar store, or rinse out one you own. Fill it half vinegar, half plain tap water. Label it. That's the everywhere bottle. A gallon mixed half and half makes two gallons of cleaner and lasts my house most of a year. Four dollars against the fifty a year most houses spend.
In this video I show you the exact half-and-half mix, how to do windows and mirrors without streaks, the stovetop while it's barely warm, the overnight bag trick for a crusted shower head, the vinegar brew cycle for a slow coffee maker, the steaming-bowl method for a baked-on microwave, why a soak works where a spray won't, and the splash in the rinse water that keeps rags from souring.
I also tell you where it falls short. Keep it off natural stone, because acid etches granite and marble over time, and vinegar is a cleaner, not a disinfectant.
