Description
King Edward VIII gave up the British throne in 1936 for the woman he loved, the twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. For thirty-five years they lived as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in exile, drifting between Paris, New York, and the Bahamas, hosting the famous and the fabulously rich inside a shuttered villa on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. But when Edward died of throat cancer in May 1972, the fairy tale ended, and something far darker began.
This is the untold story of what happened to Wallis Simpson in the fourteen years between the Duke's death and her own. It is a story of a widow slowly disappearing from the world, of a brilliant and controlling French lawyer named Suzanne Blum who took total command of her affairs, of friends turned away at the gate, of staff dismissed, of possessions sold off, and of an old woman left bedridden in a sealed Paris mansion while the greatest jewellery collection of the twentieth century waited to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
From her final visit to Buckingham Palace in 1972, to her hollow funeral at St George's Chapel in 1986 where her name was never spoken from the pulpit, to the record-shattering Sotheby's sale in Geneva that raised over fifty million dollars for a French medical foundation, this video traces the long, lonely twilight of the woman the British Empire never forgave.
Along the way we look at the role of Mohamed Al-Fayed, who took over the villa and later tried to sell its contents to raise money for charities linked to Princess Diana and his son Dodi. We examine the serious allegations made by the Duchess's Swiss secretary Johanna Schutz, documented by biographers Caroline Blackwood, Hugo Vickers, and Anne Sebba. And we ask the harder question hiding underneath all of it. Was Wallis Simpson a villain, a victim, or something more complicated than either side has ever been willing to admit?
