Description

Pamban Bridge | New Pamban Rail Bridge | Vertical Lift Bridge | Pamban Bridge Engineering | Rameswaram Bridge | Indian Railways For more than a century, the Pamban Bridge stood over the sea as a vital railway connection to Rameswaram. But constant exposure to salty seawater and marine conditions created a major engineering challenge. The new Pamban Bridge was designed to address these problems with a completely different approach to structural design and corrosion protection. In this documentary, we explore the engineering behind the new Pamban Bridge, including its 72.5 metre vertical lift span, motor-driven lifting system, protective coating, welded steel connections and massive foundation structure. The bridge is 2.07 kilometres long and consists of 100 spans, with its structure designed to handle demanding marine conditions, tidal currents, cyclonic wind loads and seismic conditions. The most fascinating part is how the engineers redesigned the lifting mechanism itself. Instead of the old rolling-lift system, the central span now moves vertically, rising 17 metres to allow ships to pass. The motors are positioned high on the towers, away from direct exposure to sea spray, while the structural connections and protective systems are designed to reduce corrosion risks. Opened in April 2025, the new Pamban Bridge represents a major chapter in Indian railway infrastructure, combining modern structural engineering with the unique challenges of building directly over the sea. #PambanBridge #NewPambanBridge #PambanRailBridge #VerticalLiftBridge #IndianRailways #BridgeEngineering
