Description
If getting around has gotten harder, do not give up the train. Amtrak has a whole set of services built for exactly that, most of them free, and almost nobody over 65 asks for a single one. Here are seven worth asking for.
I'm Stanley Pike, and I went through Amtrak's own accessibility pages and pulled the seven that matter most after 65: an accessible seat or a space to stay in your own wheelchair, a courtesy wheelchair and staff help at the station, real help getting on and off with a bridge plate or a station lift, bringing your own mobility device, oxygen, and service animal, the honest truth about what a crew can and cannot help with, the Accessible Bedroom for overnight trips, and the discount almost nobody claims, 10% off for you and another 10% off for the companion who helps you. The one word that unlocks all of them is ask, when you book.
Get my ebook, How I Saved $5,000 on Amtrak After 65: the full Fare Before Fancy system for pricing a trip in the right order, coach versus roomette breakdowns, and the checklist I run before every trip. Not a promise of what your own trip will save, just the order I check things in.

Not affiliated with Amtrak. Accessible seating, station wheelchair and staff assistance, boarding help (bridge plates and station lifts), mobility device rules, oxygen and service-animal policy, the Accessible Bedroom, and the disability and companion discounts are all from Amtrak's own accessibility pages as they read in September 2026. Amtrak can change its services and rules, and the crew cannot provide personal care, so call 1-800-USA-RAIL and confirm what applies to your own trip.
