Description
What happened to Libya's royal family after Gaddafi seized power in 1969? Most people know the story of Gaddafi's rise and fall, but almost nobody talks about the House of Senussi — the family that built Libya, led it to independence, and then lost everything in a single night. They were imprisoned, tortured, humiliated, and had their ancestors' graves dug up and scattered into the desert. And yet, more than 50 years later, a growing movement inside Libya wants to bring them back.
This is the untold story of the Senussi dynasty — from a Sufi religious order founded in Mecca in 1837, to the throne of an independent Libya, to exile, persecution, and an extraordinary modern-day resurgence.
In this video, we cover:
• The founding of the Senussi Order and its rise across the Sahara
• Libya's brutal resistance against Italian colonialism and the execution of Omar Mukhtar
• How King Idris led Libya to independence in 1951
• The discovery of oil in 1959 and how sudden wealth destabilized the kingdom
• The bloodless coup of September 1, 1969 by a 27-year-old second lieutenant
• The imprisonment, house arrest, and systematic humiliation of the royal family
• Gaddafi's destruction of Senussi mosques, tombs, and sacred sites in 1984
• Crown Prince Hasan's stroke, exile to London, and death in 1992
• Prince Ahmed al-Senussi's 31 years as a political prisoner
• The 2011 revolution and the return of the monarchy flag
• Prince Mohammed el-Senussi and the modern movement to restore the constitution
• Why young Libyans are now rallying behind a king they never knew
