Description

Ptolemy IV Philopator was one of the most evil kings in the Bible, and most Christians have never heard his story. In 3 Maccabees, a book found in the Eastern Orthodox Bible, this Egyptian king of the Ptolemaic dynasty wins a great battle at Raphia and then travels to Jerusalem. There he decides to force his way into the Holy of Holies, the most sacred room of the Jerusalem temple, where only the high priest could enter. The priests fall to the ground, the people of Jerusalem cry and beg him to stop, and the high priest Simon prays to God. Then God strikes Ptolemy down, shaking him like a reed until he collapses, unable to move or speak. But Ptolemy doesn’t learn his lesson. He returns to Alexandria in Egypt filled with hatred for the Jewish people. He orders the Jews of Egypt to be chained, dragged from their homes, and locked inside the hippodrome outside Alexandria. His plan is horrifying: Hermon, the keeper of the royal elephants, is ordered to make 500 war elephants drunk with wine and frankincense, so they will rage and trample the Jews to death. But again and again, something stops the king. When the drunken elephants are finally driven toward the helpless Jews, the old priest Eleazar prays to God. Then two terrifying angels appear from heaven, and what happens next changes everything. This animated Bible story retells 3 Maccabees in a cinematic way, staying true to what the text actually says. It’s one of the lost books of the Bible that many Christians have never read, full of God’s judgment, faith, prayer, angels, and a king who fought against God and found out who was really in control.
