Description

When Jensen Huang announced NVIDIA's first AI supercomputer - the DGX-1 - nobody wanted it. Zero purchase orders. He said: "I had no purchase orders, not one. Nobody wanted to buy it." Except Elon. Jensen and Elon were doing a fireside chat about self-driving cars and Elon said "You know what? I have a company that could really use this." Jensen: "Wow, my first customer." Elon: "Yeah, we have this nonprofit company." Jensen said all the blood drained from his face. He had spent a few billion dollars building this thing. It cost $300,000. The chances of a nonprofit being able to pay for it was approximately zero. Elon said: "It's an AI company, a nonprofit, we could really use one of these supercomputers." Jensen had built the first one for NVIDIA to use internally. He boxed one up, drove it himself to San Francisco, and delivered it in 2016. He walked up to the second floor to a tiny room - smaller than a podcast studio. A bunch of researchers were there. That tiny room was OpenAI. Business Lesson: Your first customer will never look like your dream customer. NVIDIA's dream customer was a big tech company with a huge budget. Their actual first customer was a broke nonprofit in a tiny room in SF. Most founders would have said "They can't afford it." Jensen said "They BELIEVE in it." He didn't just sell it, he DELIVERED it himself. That nonprofit had Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Andrej Karpathy inside. That $300K supercomputer helped train the models that became ChatGPT. One delivery in 2016 built NVIDIA's $3 Trillion AI empire. Don't chase the check. Chase the believers.
