Description
At sixty-nine, left alone in Ohio with a meager $1,200 pension, I was slowly wasting away from the cold, the poverty, and the terrifying fear of dying alone. In complete desperation, I sold everything I owned and flew to Cebu, Philippines, expecting only to spend my final days there.
Instead of loneliness, I found a real family. When I fell ill, my poor neighbors in the barangay nursed me back to health, sharing the little they had and welcoming me as "Lola Mary" (Grandmother Mary). In return, my small pension became a lifeline for our whole community: today, I cook hot meals every day for dozens of hungry children, elderly folks, and neighbors in need.
This country lifted me back onto my feet and showed me that true wealth isn't measured in dollars, but in community and the power to give others hope.
