I take you across Pennsylvania to ten Italian restaurants where the food is only part of the story.
I explore immigrant families, a members-only social club, a restaurant rebuilt after a fire, a legendary South Philadelphia pasta kitchen, and the traditions behind dishes from Pittsburgh to the Italian Market. I also examine the competing claims surrounding some of the country’s oldest Italian restaurants.
Along the way, I look at the histories of Piccolo Forno, Dianoya’s Eatery, A La Familia, Gricos, Fiorella, La Vertu, Polizzi Social Club, Vetri Cucina, Dante and Luigi’s, and Ralph’s Italian Restaurant. These are stories about family, place, survival, and keeping the light on for the next generation.
