#Seoul #KoreanHistory #Timelapse Running Through Seoul | First-Person Timelapse: 6000 Years in 12 Minutes 6000 years, one river valley, a capital that was burned, occupied, and fought over — and this video finally lets you run through all of it. This video follows a single valley on the Han River, ringed by mountains, where Neolithic villagers built pit-houses on the riverbank around 4000 BCE. Centuries later, Joseon geomancers chose the same ground as the most auspicious place in the kingdom to found a capital. Everything around it changes across 6000 years — kingdoms, dynasties, occupiers, ideologies, skylines. The river and the mountains never do. One of the strangest chapters belongs to the royal palace of Gyeongbokgung. Built in 1395 as the heart of the new capital, it burned during the Japanese invasion of 1592 and lay in ruins for more than 270 years. It was rebuilt in the 1860s, and then, under colonial rule, the Japanese Government-General Building was raised directly in front of it to hide it from view. That building was only torn down in the 1990s. In the Korean War, Seoul changed hands four times in less than a year, and much of the city was reduced to rubble. Within a single lifetime, that same city became one of the largest, most connected metropolises on earth. The video unfolds in three parts. Part One – Riverbank villages and rival ancient kingdoms fight for control of the Han River valley. Part Two – Joseon founds its capital Hanyang: palaces, city walls, a new alphabet, invasions and rebuilding. Part Three – Colonial rule, war, and the rise of the modern megacity Seoul has become today. Every scene stays inside the same valley — the banks of the Han River beneath the mountains that frame the city. The locations inside Seoul shift with every era: the Neolithic riverbank settlement, the palace of Gyeongbokgung, the Hanyang city walls and gates, the colonial streets, the ruins of the Korean War, the neon of Myeongdong, the towers of Gangnam. The locations shift, but the valley is one. A quick note: this is a creative reconstruction of Seoul's transformation, not a documentary reenactment. I aimed for historical grounding wherever possible, but across 6000 years of change, some compression and simplification was unavoidable. Behind the scenes: Location basis: Seoul, anchored in the Han River valley, from the Neolithic riverbank settlement to Gyeongbokgung, the Hanyang city walls, and the modern skyline ✓ Mapped out the key historical turning points worth showing (full list under "Sources & Research") ✓ Planned the sequence, pacing, and visual progression of a single city through time ✓ Built and refined each location using AI, keeping the runner grounded and eye-level throughout ✓ Filled each scene with era-accurate people, transport, and detail using AI ✓ Animated every frame, then hand-edited, composited, and polished each transition ✓ Layered in sound design matched to the mood of each period 🕐 Jump to Any Era: 00:19 – Early Settlements and Baekje (4000 BCE – 660) 01:16 – Unified Silla and Goryeo (685 – 1308) 02:00 – Early Joseon: Birth of the Capital (1394 – 1592) 03:28 – The Imjin War and Recovery (1592 – 1680) 04:24 – Late Joseon: Prosperity and Isolation (1712 – 1875) 05:29 – The Opening of Korea and the Korean Empire (1876 – 1907) 06:34 – The Japanese Colonial Era (1910 – 1945) 07:36 – Liberation, Division and the Korean War (1945 – 1953) 08:51 – The Miracle on the Han River (1955 – 1987) 10:13 – The Olympics and Modernization (1988 – 2000) 11:02 – Hallyu and Today (2002 – 2026) 🔎 Where the Facts Came From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyeongbokgung https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jongmyo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangang_Bridge_bombing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Battle_of_Seoul https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheonggyecheon © I Caught Time, 2026.
