Description
Giant Squid vs Colossal Squid
The Giant Squid has been the ocean's most famous monster for centuries — the creature behind the kraken myth, the animal with the largest eyes on Earth, first filmed alive only in 2004. But it isn't the biggest squid in the ocean. Not even close.
Below Antarctica, in freezing, pitch-black water, lives the Colossal Squid — shorter, but more than twice as heavy, and armed with 360°-rotating hooks instead of sucker rings. It's the heaviest invertebrate that has ever lived.
Here's the part that breaks people's brains: these two ocean titans aren't related. Different family, different ocean, 60–100 million years of completely separate evolution — and yet nature built the exact same kind of monster twice. This video breaks down how deep-sea gigantism and polar gigantism independently produced two apex predators with opposite hunting strategies, why only one predator on Earth — the sperm whale — hunts both of them, and what that says about the rules that govern evolution itself.
