Description
When the power goes out in winter, staying warm with no electricity comes down to a few things that actually work — and one that can kill you. Here are 20 ways to heat your home, your room, and yourself during a winter blackout, ranked worst to first by an old-timer who's lived it.
No furnace, no generator, no grid — just honest, off-grid ways to stay warm when the power goes out. In this video I walk through 20 no-electricity heat sources for a winter power outage: sealing off one room, cold-rated sleeping bags, mylar blankets, hand warmers, hot water bottles and heated stones, emergency candles, oil lamps, canned cooking fuel, alcohol and butane stoves, rocket stoves, the truth about charcoal indoors, compact wood stoves, catalytic propane heaters, fireplaces, non-electric pellet stoves, wood stoves, kerosene heaters — and the safest indoor propane heater to keep you warm through the night.
Most of these you can stockpile now, cheap, before the cold hits. But number 8 is the one that fills emergency rooms every winter, and number 1 is the only heat source you can run safely in a sealed room. If you're prepping for a winter storm, an ice storm, or a long power outage — this is the emergency heating plan I'd want on the shelf before I needed it.
⚠️ Never burn charcoal or a grill indoors. Always use a battery carbon monoxide alarm and ventilation with any fuel-burning heater. Stay safe, neighbor.
