Description

On this 1997 WWDC moment - an engineer asks Jobs "What about OpenDoc? I spent a lot of time on it." Jobs says: "It's dead. I put a bullet in the head of it." Then he explains why Apple was failing: " Apple suffered from lousy engineering management. People going off in 18 different directions doing interesting things. Good engineers. Lousy management. You look at the farm with all these animals going in different directions - the total is less than the sum of the parts." The Lesson: "You think focusing is saying yes. No. Focusing is about saying no. You have to say no, no, no. And when you say no, you piss off people." He said they would talk to the San Jose Mercury and write shitty articles about him. But he took the lumps like an adult. Why this matters for you: Most founders think they need more ideas, more products, more features. Jobs says you need to kill 90% of them. Microcosmically, OpenDoc made sense. Macrocosmically, it made no sense. The rest of the world wasn't going to use it. Hack: List your 18 directions right now. Circle 2 that actually add up to more than the sum of parts. Put a bullet in the head of the other 16. That's focus.
