Sicily, Italy Struck by Massive Tornado! 🌪️ Homes Destroyed, Vehicles Overturned in Marsala

Sicily, Italy was struck by a violent tornado on October 9, 2026, leaving widespread destruction across Marsala, Petrosino and Mazara del Vallo. Homes were destroyed or severely damaged, vehicles overturned, roofs ripped apart and a school badly damaged as powerful winds swept through western Sicily's Trapani province. The Marsala tornado developed during an intense Mediterranean storm. Two large waterspouts appeared offshore near Marsala before destructive winds swept inland, striking residential neighborhoods, roads, public buildings and agricultural areas. Marsala suffered some of the worst tornado damage, particularly around Terrenove, Bambina, Pastorella and Via Nazionale (SS115). Powerful winds tore roofs from buildings, shattered windows, brought down electricity poles and overturned cars and trucks. Fallen trees and debris blocked roads, while railway services were disrupted across the affected area. One of the most dramatic incidents occurred at the Alcide De Gasperi school in Terrenove, where 273 children were inside when the tornado struck. Windows shattered, ceiling sections were damaged and debris filled classrooms. School staff moved pupils into safer areas as the building sustained extensive damage. Several children suffered minor injuries, and the school was declared unusable. Petrosino was also hit by destructive winds. Several homes were destroyed or severely damaged, while a vehicle carrying two people was thrown into a ravine. Emergency responders rescued the occupants, who required hospital treatment. The storm also damaged a municipal waste collection center and part of the local stadium. In Mazara del Vallo, emergency services responded to storm-related injuries, including an elderly man who required specialist treatment in Palermo. Firefighters and Civil Protection teams worked across the affected communities as authorities assessed damage and arranged assistance for displaced residents. The Sicily tornado caused widespread destruction beyond residential neighborhoods. Vineyards, greenhouses, agricultural buildings, electricity infrastructure and transportation routes were damaged. Fallen trees, overturned vehicles and scattered debris obstructed roads, while railway disruptions affected travel through Trapani province. Reports published on October 9 indicated at least 11 people injured across the affected area, although the figures remained preliminary. Local and regional authorities began documenting losses and preparing emergency support for families whose homes were no longer safe.
