New Food Stamp Rules for Seniors — Do This Before They Hit

New food stamp (SNAP) rules are on the way. Your Social Security raise can shrink your food stamps with no warning letter, some states start saying no at the register on November 1, stolen benefits are no longer replaced, and February's benefits depend on Congress after December 11. What's inside: 1. How food stamps are worked out: the maximum ($306 one person / $562 couple) minus 30% of net income. Worked examples: a widow on $1,100 gets about $179 a month with her costs claimed, about $41 without; a couple on $2,200 goes from $0 to about $78 by counting two Medicare premiums 2. The Social Security raise (announced Oct 14, paid in January) is applied to SNAP automatically, with no notice of adverse action (7 CFR 273.12). A $35 raise can take about $16 off 3. The $20 heating shortcut: households with someone 60+ or disabled who get more than $20 in LIHEAP still get the full utility allowance 4. Internet costs can no longer count as a housing cost 5. Soda/candy restrictions start Nov 1 in Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina and Virginia. Already in Texas, Florida, Indiana, Utah, Idaho, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas. Blocked by a court in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, West Virginia. None in California, New York, Georgia 6. Stores that take SNAP must meet a new stocking rule by Nov 4 7. November, December and January benefits are covered through the Dec 11 funding law. February depends on Congress 8. Stolen benefits: federal replacement ended Dec 20, 2024. California is the exception 9. Work requirement now up to age 64; 65+ exempt 10. The Elderly Simplified Application (36 months, no recertification interview) — Georgia's Senior SNAP 11. Restaurant Meals Program — everyone in the household must be 60+, disabled or homeless 12. What counts as income; savings limit $4,750 for 60+ (home and retirement accounts not counted); $25 minimum benefit for 1-2 person households 13.
