Description
What did this Yellow-headed Caracara find around the tail of a grazing horse?
Hidden among the hairs are hard ticks — small blood-feeding ectoparasites that attach firmly to the skin.
Yellow-headed Caracaras are highly opportunistic birds, and documented observations show them removing ticks from large mammals, including horses.
In this wildlife documentary, the bird searches the horse’s rump and tail-adjacent coat for individual parasites, carefully gripping and removing the ticks it can reach.
Not every attempt succeeds.
Some ticks detach quickly.
Others remain firmly attached.
And whenever the horse swishes its tail or shifts its hindquarters, the bird has to move away and try again later.
Different tick species can attach to different parts of a horse’s body, including the ears, neck, chest, groin, inner thighs, mane, tail base, and under-tail region.
The caracara is not “rescuing” the horse.
It is feeding.
The horse may benefit because some ectoparasites are removed, while the bird gains a meal.
This temporary overlap of interests creates one of nature’s most unusual cleaning interactions.
