Description
A yellow pillow goes out in the sun, everybody's grandmother says so, and the makers of latex pillows and memory foam beds say to keep theirs out of it. My mother hung every pillow in our house over the balcony railing every Sunday in Lipa, Batangas, and she never owned either kind. So before your next Sunday, anak, and anak is how we say my child, find out which pillow is on your bed, because the one part of her Sunday that works on every pillow you own was out on that balcony with the sun.
So here is why pillows turn yellow, which of yours can go in the sun and which stay in the shade, how to clean a yellowed pillow without setting the stain in the dryer, and three small habits that keep the yellow from coming back.
WHY PILLOWS TURN YELLOW
- Casper says a pillow usually turns yellow from moisture oxidizing, the sweat, the oil from your skin, a little drool, the cream on your face and the hair you went to bed with still wet.
- Colorado State University's extension service says heat sets stains, so nothing goes in the dryer until the stain is completely gone.
MY MOTHER'S SUNDAY
- Every unan, every pillow, went over the railing once the dew was off, got turned over at noon, and came inside before the sun went down.
- The kutson, our mattress, stood by the open window, and the banig, the sleeping mat woven by hand from dried grass or tikog leaves, was unrolled in the sun.
WHAT THE SUN CANNOT DO
- Shanina Knighton of Case Western Reserve University told Tom's Guide that the dense fill inside a pillow never catches the sun, and that sunlight does not lift soil off anything.
SHADE PILLOWS: MEMORY FOAM AND LATEX
- They do not go in the washing machine (Tempur-Pedic, Avocado) and they do not go in direct sun (Organic Textiles, Circadian, Puffy). Air them in a shaded, breezy spot.
- For a yellow spot on memory foam, the Sleep Foundation says a little mild detergent in lukewarm water on a washcloth, blotted from the outside edge inward.
- If a latex pillow has gone yellow all over, Circadian says the latex itself is breaking down.
- Some shredded memory foam pillows can be washed if the maker allows it, so read your tag.
SUN PILLOWS: POLYESTER AND DOWN
- Puffy says 3 to 4 hours of sun for polyester and 2 to 3 for down, turned over along the way. After that, let it finish in the shade where the air still moves.
- Nothing stays out overnight. Pacific Coast says do not use or store a damp pillow.
- If it needs a real wash, Clorox says down and polyester pillows can both be washed. Wash it by the tag and look for yellow before it goes near the dryer.
THREE SMALL HABITS
- Sunday is the day, every week.
- Nobody goes to bed with wet hair.
- Pull the blanket back in the morning and let the bed breathe before you make it.
Is yours a sun pillow or a shade pillow? Read the tag and tell me in the comments.
