Description
I put a ball of aluminum foil in a school toilet on a Friday and left it there until Monday, and I put a second one in the tank behind it. This is what happened, and then this is what actually takes that ring off, from a man who cleaned thirty-two toilets for forty years.
The short version of the foil: it will not hurt your toilet and it will not do anything either, and the reason is in the video and it is not the reason you would guess.
Here is the rest of it.
Why the bleach under your sink has never once removed that ring, and how the company that makes it says so on their own website. Bleach takes the color out of the living film sitting on top of the mineral. The mineral stays exactly where it was. That is why the bowl looks clean at noon and looks like a ring again by suppertime.
Why white and orange are two completely different problems that need two different bottles from two different aisles, and how to tell yours apart with a flashlight in ten seconds.
The step in front of every cleaner that almost nobody does, which is that you are pouring it into a bowl full of water and watering it down before it ever touches anything.
The tool custodians have always used, why it works where a brush does not, and the one condition that makes the difference between cleaning your bowl and marking it permanently.
And the last one, which is why your ring comes back in three days no matter how well you clean. It is not in the bowl. There is a row of holes under the rim that you have never once looked at, and when they close up your flush stops rinsing the sides of the bowl entirely. You can check yours tonight with a mirror and thirty seconds.
There is also one thing in here I got wrong for years and did to thirty-two tanks. Three toilet manufacturers put it in writing and I never read it.
I was never a chemist and I never said I was. I had thirty-two toilets, a mirror on a stick and no budget.
