Description
Twenty-four ordinary people walked into a university basement in 1971. Not criminals. Not violent people. Just students who needed quick cash. Within six days, some of them changed completely, not because cruelty was hiding inside them all along, but because of something far more disturbing: how easily situation and permission can override personality.
This episode tells the story of the Stanford Prison Experiment, one of the most famous psychology studies in history, and one of the most controversial. We walk through what actually happened inside that basement: the coin toss that decided who became a guard and who became a prisoner, the guard who slowly became the most feared person in the study, the prisoner whose breakdown shocked the research team, and the outsider who finally walked in and ended it after only six days.
But this episode does not stop at the famous version of the story. For nearly fifty years, this experiment was taught in psychology classrooms worldwide as proof that ordinary people turn cruel the moment real power is placed in their hands. Then a French researcher spent years digging through the original archives, tracking down the surviving participants, and uncovered something that changed how many psychologists now view the entire study. The guards were briefed and guided far more directly than most people realize, and even the most famous breakdown in the study had a layer nobody talked about for decades.
We also look at why this experiment still shaped real-world events long after 1971, including its influence on how a real military abuse scandal was explained to the public, and why the underlying idea, that ordinary people can cause real harm under the right conditions, is still supported by other, more carefully designed research today.
This video is part of our ongoing "Why..." series, where we take a surprising claim or a shocking fact and trace it back to its real, documented origin, separating what is genuinely supported by evide
