Description

First safe elevator | Elisha Otis | elevator safety brake | 1854 Crystal Palace | first passenger elevator | elevator history In the 1850s, elevators could move heavy loads between floors, but one broken rope could turn the machine into a deadly trap. Then Elisha Otis came up with a simple but revolutionary idea: a safety brake that could stop the platform if the lifting rope failed. But proving the idea was another challenge. In 1854, at New York’s Crystal Palace Exhibition, Otis stood high above the crowd on his platform and ordered the retaining rope to be cut. The platform dropped only a few inches before the safety brake stopped it. That dramatic demonstration helped prove that elevators could be made much safer. Then came the real breakthrough for passengers. In 1857, Otis installed his first passenger elevator at New York City’s E.V. Haughwout Building, a five-story department store. From a dangerous lifting machine to a technology that helped make taller buildings practical, the story of the safe elevator is really the story of how engineering changed the way cities could grow. #ElishaOtis #ElevatorHistory #EngineeringHistory #Elevator #HistoryOfInventions
