Description

Uganda’s Parliament has raised questions about Ugandans reportedly recruited or taken to Russia in connection with the Russia-Ukraine war, alongside concerns over the distribution of agricultural equipment funded by the government. During the parliamentary session, a Member of Parliament presented documents, correspondence and a list of 121 individuals reportedly affected, calling for answers about their circumstances. The Prime Minister committed to providing a formal response to Parliament by the following Tuesday. Members also debated the wording used to describe how the individuals travelled to Russia, with some suggesting that “unclear circumstances” was more appropriate than “duress.” The Speaker welcomed special guests to the public gallery, including Miss Universe International 2026 and a student association from Kiruhura District. Later, MPs questioned the transparency of the distribution of 7 million hand hoes and tractors, reportedly funded through a supplementary budget passed in December 2025. The Prime Minister agreed that the Minister of Agriculture should provide Parliament with a status report. Watch the full parliamentary proceedings for the questions raised, the government’s commitments and the issues MPs want addressed. What should Parliament prioritise in its follow-up: answers about Ugandans reportedly involved in the Russia-Ukraine war, or accountability for agricultural equipment distribution?
