Description
Cannae, 216 BC — Rome marched more than eighty thousand men onto the battlefield to destroy Hannibal once and for all. For most of the battle, they believed they were winning.
They were wrong.
This cinematic reconstruction follows the Battle of Cannae from inside the Roman ranks and from Hannibal Barca’s command as one of the most famous encirclements in military history slowly takes shape.
Rome concentrates overwhelming force in the center. Hannibal gives ground. His line bends. Then it begins to break for real.
The Romans push deeper.
And the battlefield starts closing around them.
Experience the cavalry battle on the river flank, the collapse of the Roman wings, Hannibal fighting inside his own failing center, the moment the trap is finally revealed, and the destruction of the largest army Rome had ever assembled on a single field.
By nightfall, ancient accounts would place Roman losses as high as seventy thousand men.
But Cannae is more than the story of a tactical masterpiece. It is also the story of a victory so complete that generals would study it for more than two thousand years — and a victory that still failed to win Hannibal the war.
