The Grenadians Were Never Who We Thought — DNA Revealed Their Hidden Ancestry

What does Grenadian DNA reveal about the hidden ancestry of the people of Grenada? In this video, we explore Grenadian ancestry, Caribbean genetics, African ancestry, European ancestry, Native American ancestry, and the complex genetic history of Grenada. Genetic research involving Grenadian and other African Caribbean populations has found substantial West African ancestry, alongside smaller European and Native American components. One study of African Caribbean populations that included Grenada estimated the pooled sample at an average of 77% West African, 15% European, and 7.7% Native American ancestry, while another review lists a Grenada sample at approximately 81% West African, 12% European, and 7% Native American ancestry. We’ll explore how migration, colonial history, the transatlantic slave trade, Indigenous Caribbean populations, and later population movements shaped Grenadian genetics.
