Geneticists Revealed The Lapita Were Never Who We Thought | Here's What The DNA Shows For decades, the Lapita were described as a single seafaring people who carried their distinctive dentate-stamped pottery across the Pacific and became the ancestors of later Oceanic populations. But ancient DNA is revealing a far more complicated story. Genetic evidence from Vanuatu, Tonga, Fiji, and the Bismarck Archipelago suggests that the people associated with Lapita culture did not belong to one homogeneous biological population. This video explores how early Lapita-associated individuals showed strong East Asian and Indigenous Taiwanese-related ancestry, while later migrations brought substantial Papuan ancestry into Remote Oceania. We examine the surprising genetic differences between islands, the survival of Austronesian languages despite major population changes, and evidence that pottery, language, migration, and biological ancestry did not always travel together. Ultimately, the evidence challenges the idea of the “Lapita people” as one genetically unified population. Instead, Lapita may be better understood as a shared cultural phenomenon—connecting different communities through pottery, maritime technology, language, exchange networks, and migration across thousands of kilometers of the Pacific. The DNA transforms an old mystery from “Where did the Lapita people go?” into a much deeper question: were they ever a single people at all?
