Description
What would happen if the Sun disappeared for one week?
For the first eight minutes, nobody on Earth would know. The sunlight
already on its way would keep arriving, the sky would stay blue, and life
would carry on completely normally. Then the light would run out, and the
sky above every city on the planet would fill with stars in the middle of
the afternoon.
In this documentary we follow the seven days that would follow, minute by
minute. Earth would stop curving through space and fly off in a straight
line at 107,000 kilometres per hour. Temperatures would collapse past
anything in recorded history. The oceans would begin to freeze from the
surface down. Photosynthesis would stop within hours, and the entire food
chain would start unravelling from the bottom.
But Earth would not die as fast as you think. The planet holds an enormous
amount of heat, the atmosphere would keep working, and deep beneath the
frozen surface some life would never even notice the Sun was gone.
And then, after seven days, the Sun comes back. What that would do to a
frozen planet is the part nobody talks about.
WHAT YOU'LL SEE IN THIS VIDEO
This is a science based thought experiment, built on real physics:
orbital mechanics, heat capacity, radiative cooling and atmospheric
behaviour. Every number in this video comes from what we actually know
about how the solar system holds itself together.
If you enjoy space documentaries, Earth science and what if scenarios
about the solar system, subscribe to The Last Day. New documentary every
week on the moments that could end a world.
