🪱 Darwin spent forty years studying earthworms, and his last book proved what every old gardener knew: bring the worms back and dead soil turns to black gold. Here’s exactly how to do it, without buying a single worm.
This is the full method, step by step, with the numbers from extension services and soil research, the way our grandparents kept their ground alive before anyone sold fertilizer in a bag.
The worm count test — dig one cubic foot in spring or fall and count: ten or more is healthy soil, fewer than five means something is driving them away.
What worms really do — Darwin’s chalk buried seven inches in twenty-nine years, castings with 5x the nitrate, 7x the phosphorus and 11x the potassium of topsoil, and 25% more crop on average where worms are present.
Why buying worms fails — the three kinds of earthworms, why red wigglers belong in a bin, and how nightcrawlers find you on their own.
The five worm killers — tilling, bare soil, salty fertilizer, sprays and compaction, and why “dead” soil is rarely poisoned.
The worm blanket, step by step — cardboard, 1–3 inches of compost, 2–4 inches of shredded leaves or straw, feeding stations and a buried-bucket worm tower, with quantities per bed and per 100 sq ft.
No-dig planting and cover crops — planting through the blanket, broadforking hard ground, and cereal rye and crimson clover seed rates for fall.
Black gold in a bin — red wiggler bin sizing, bedding, temperature, harvest, castings rates for pots and beds, worm tea, and worms for your hens (plus the gapeworm warning).
The jumping worm warning — how to spot the invasive worm that strips soil, and how to keep it out of your garden.
📘 Every number in this video, from the soil test labs and the lime and sulfur tables to the cover crop seed rates, the no-dig bed method and the complete worm bin chapter, is in The Backyard Systems Manual. Get it, or all three Merritt Garden manuals together, here: [LINK WEB]
How many worms did you find in your cubic foot? Dig one this weekend and tell me your number and your state in the comments.
