Description
The most dangerous time to be born a dinosaur was not the day the asteroid hit. For every Tyrannosaurus rex that reached full size, dozens never got close. Most dinosaurs died young, and not from anything dramatic. A newborn tyrannosaur was roughly the size of a chicken, defenseless, and worth exactly one meal to almost everything around it, including adults of its own species.
In this prehistoric documentary we answer a question almost nobody asks: across 165 million years of dinosaurs, when was the worst possible moment to hatch?
We start with the egg, and a hard physical limit that shaped everything about dinosaur life. Dinosaur eggs could never grow past roughly the size of a rugby ball, which is why the largest animals ever to walk the Earth started life the size of a housecat and had to increase their body mass ten thousand times over in a world full of predators.
Then we break down the four killers that operated in sequence: nest raiders, the deadly first weeks, growth itself, and the one nobody expects, adults of their own species. There is fossil evidence of tyrannosaur bones bearing tyrannosaur bite marks.
Then we rule out the obvious answer. The asteroid impact was not a dangerous time, it was an impossible one, and we explain exactly why that distinction matters.
The real answer is the Late Triassic, the very beginning, when dinosaurs were not rulers but underdogs living in a brutal arid world dominated by the ancestors of crocodiles, with the climate itself falling apart around them. Almost nothing born into that world survived. And that nightmare is the only reason dinosaurs ever ruled the planet at all.
