Description

What happens when humans build a dam so massive that the water behind it can measurably affect Earth’s rotation? The Three Gorges Dam is one of the largest engineering projects ever attempted. Built across China’s Yangtze River, the project transformed an enormous river system into a massive reservoir while creating one of the most powerful hydroelectric facilities ever constructed. But building it was far more complicated than simply pouring concrete. In this documentary, we go inside the construction of the Three Gorges Dam — from the deadly floods that helped drive the project, to the diversion of the Yangtze River, the excavation of its granite foundation, the construction of the massive concrete wall, the underground turbine caverns, the five-stage ship locks, and the enormous infrastructure required to move electricity and ships through the region. We also examine the human and environmental consequences: the relocation of around 1.3 million people, submerged towns and archaeological sites, landslides, changes to the Yangtze ecosystem, seismic concerns, and the long-term effects of creating one of the world's largest reservoirs. And then there is the fact that scientists calculated the reservoir's enormous mass could increase the length of a day by about 0.06 microseconds — an almost unimaginably small change, but a remarkable illustration of how much mass this structure and reservoir contain. NASA has also documented the construction and enormous transformation of the Yangtze landscape using satellite imagery. This is not simply a story about a dam. It is a story about engineering, energy, flood control, transportation, environmental change, human displacement, and the enormous consequences of decisions made at a civilization-scale. 📚 SOURCES / FURTHER READING: NASA Earth Observatory — Three Gorges Dam https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/three-gorges-dam-china-7769 NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory — Earth’s Rotation and the Three Gorges Reservoir https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-details-earthquake-effects-on-the-earth NASA Earth Observatory — Three Gorges Dam Construction https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/three-gorges-dam-china-6574 ⚠️ DISCLAIMER 🔍 Digital Creation: This video has been created using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, strictly for educational and documentary purposes. ⚖️ For Information Only: The content is meant solely for informational use and may not accurately reflect real-world events or constitute professional advice. ❗No Affiliation: Any similarity to real persons, organizations, or events is entirely coincidental and unintentional. #threegorgesdam #china #engineering #megaproject #dam #hydropower #construction #engineeringmarvel #infrastructure #technology #yangtzeriver #megaprojects #engineeringdocumentary
