Description

What happens when an AI is asked one of Egypt’s most controversial questions: Who really built the Great Sphinx? Online discussions have claimed that Grok AI produced an answer challenging the traditional attribution—and that the result left Egyptologists stunned. But there is an important distinction between an AI-generated hypothesis and archaeological evidence. The Great Sphinx was carved directly from the limestone bedrock at Giza during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities states that the evidence points to Pharaoh Khafre, who ruled around 2558–2532 BCE and built the second pyramid at Giza. The Sphinx sits directly beside the temples and causeway associated with his pyramid complex. Archaeological research provides additional clues. The Sphinx Temple used limestone blocks quarried from the ditch surrounding the statue, suggesting that the monument and temple were constructed as parts of a connected building project. Yet the mystery isn't completely closed. The ancient Egyptians left no surviving inscription explicitly saying, “Khafre built the Sphinx.” That gap has allowed alternative theories to persist for generations. So if Grok offers a different answer, it may be fascinating—but AI does not overturn archaeology simply by producing a surprising conclusion. The real question is whether future excavations uncover evidence strong enough to change what we know about Giza.
