Description
Is sugar really toxic?
In this clip, Dr. Robert Lustig argues that excess sugar plays a major role in obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. His broader point is that reducing added sugar could be an important part of improving metabolic health.
The evidence is strongest around excess added sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages, which can contribute to excess calorie intake and metabolic dysfunction. But calling sugar itself a toxin, or saying it is responsible for most chronic disease, is a much broader claim than the evidence supports.
The bigger takeaway: Cutting back on added sugar, especially sugary drinks and highly processed foods, can be a meaningful step toward better metabolic health.
