Description
Could pomegranate support your mitochondria?
Dr. Mark Hyman discusses urolithin A, a compound that certain gut bacteria can produce from ellagitannins found in foods like pomegranate. Research has linked urolithin A to mitophagy, the process by which cells clear damaged mitochondria and help maintain cellular health.
Human trials of urolithin A supplements have reported promising effects on certain measures of muscle function and mitochondrial health. However, the evidence does not establish that eating pomegranate alone reliably boosts VO₂ max, increases strength without exercise, or extends human lifespan. Your gut microbiome also influences how much urolithin A you produce.
The bigger takeaway: Pomegranate is a nutritious addition to your diet, and the science behind urolithin A is promising. But a compound showing potential in clinical studies doesn’t mean eating its source food will produce the same results.
