Description
Is LDL cholesterol really as simple as “good” versus “bad”?
In this clip, the speaker explains the differences between large, buoyant LDL and small, dense LDL, and how triglycerides and diet can influence your cholesterol profile.
There is some nuance here: small, dense LDL is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, often alongside elevated triglycerides and insulin resistance. However, large, buoyant LDL is not automatically harmless. All LDL particles can contribute to plaque formation, and the number of atherogenic particles, often measured by ApoB, is an important factor in assessing risk. HDL is also more complex than simply “the higher, the better.”
The bigger takeaway: Don’t judge your cardiovascular risk by LDL cholesterol alone. Triglycerides, ApoB, HDL, blood pressure, and your overall health all matter. Reducing excess added sugar and refined carbohydrates can help improve metabolic health, but dietary fat and medication decisions should be individualized.
