Description
Could stronger legs be connected to a healthier brain?
Dr. Louisa Nicola discusses research linking greater leg strength and power with larger hippocampal volume and better cognitive performance. One twin study of identical female twins found that the twin with greater leg power tended to have a larger hippocampus and better fluid intelligence.
Muscle strength is also closely connected to metabolic health, including insulin sensitivity. But this type of study shows an association, not proof that having larger leg muscles directly causes a larger brain or better cognition.
The bigger takeaway: Building and maintaining muscle, especially lower-body strength, may be an important part of healthy aging for both body and brain.
