Description
Okra for hair growth is the Caribbean remedy almost nobody over here was taught, and the part we throw away is the part that works. Janet learned it from a Trinidadian family on the hall of the nursing home where she worked, and she is straight with you about what okra water for hair really does and what it doesn't.

It will not speed your hair up. Nobody's hair grows faster than about half an inch a month. What okra gel for hair does is give your strands so much slip that your comb stops pulling them out, and for Black women who have been growing six inches a year and keeping two, that is the whole problem in one jar. You get the full okra gel recipe: how many pods, how much water, exactly how long to simmer it, how to strain it, how to work it through in sections before you wash, how long it keeps in the refrigerator, and how to freeze it.
Janet also tells you which okra hair remedies to leave alone, including the popular overnight soak. There are two studies of okra farmers behind that one, and they are the reason she says cook it and never use it raw. She covers the thirty-dollar bottle on the shelf whose second ingredient is the same thing, what actually causes breakage in our hair, and when thinning hair means a dermatologist instead of a pot on the stove.

Matsushita and colleagues, Contact Dermatitis (1989); Manda and colleagues, Contact Dermatitis (1992). Raw immature okra pods carry fine prickly hairs and proteolytic activity on the surface sufficient to cause skin lesions, and okra farmers develop occupational dermatitis on the hands and fingertips. Heated preparations did not produce the same effect.

Okra originated in present-day Ethiopia, came to the Americas with the transatlantic slave trade, and reached New Orleans in the 1700s, likely from the Caribbean. The word "okra" comes from the Igbo okwuru; "gumbo" derives from the Central Bantu word for the plant.
