Description
Gray hair care for Black women starts on the back of a jar, and that is where Janet begins: a green styling gel with Yellow Five printed in tiny letters, laid on her gray edges every single morning.

--
From there she walks through ten everyday mistakes that keep our gray hair from growing long. Hard water and the rain barrel her grandmother swore by, greasing dry gray instead of wetting it first, the purple shampoo that tones out yellow but dries the strand when you use it every wash, pressing and flat ironing that turns white hair yellow, permanent dye laid over the same ends every five weeks, skipping coconut oil before the wash, bare heads in the sun, combing gray dry from the root, and edges pulled tight for thirty years.
You will also hear why covering gray became the normal thing for so many Black women after a 1956 hair color ad, and why a sixty-three dollar silver shampoo does nothing the drugstore bottle can't. Then comes the Saturday wash day order for natural gray hair, step by step, and the signs that mean a doctor who knows Black hair should take a look.
