Description
The jar of hair grease on the bathroom sink might be thinning your crown, and it's only one of fourteen everyday hair habits Janet walks Black women over 60 through, from the grease on the scalp to the braids that hurt in the chair.

Janet learned the first one in a beauty shop chair in Macon, Georgia, when her own itching crown got worse the more she greased it. From there you'll hear the thinning hair causes most of us never connect: the blood pressure pill that shows up as shedding months later, the biotin gummy that can throw off your thyroid test, the wig glue and grip band pulling at thinning edges, the same low bun for twenty-five years, rollers pinned tight overnight, wash day stretched to a month, and the flat iron on high.
She also tells the story of the Sunday pressing comb, the 1968 name doctors gave crown hair loss in Black women, and why that name was never the whole truth. If your crown is thinning, you'll learn the one burning, itching feeling at the center of the scalp that means see a dermatologist who knows our hair, and which hair loss in women over 60 is ordinary. Plus what's actually true about rosemary oil, trims, and a hundred brush strokes.

FDA Safety Communication (2017). High-dose biotin supplements can interfere with lab tests, including thyroid and troponin tests.
LoPresti and colleagues (1968). First described "hot comb alopecia," the condition now called central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia.
Malki and colleagues, New England Journal of Medicine (2019). Variants in the PADI3 gene linked to central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia.
American Academy of Dermatology. Hair care tips for Black hair: wash once a week or every other week, relaxer touch-ups only on new growth, pain from braids means damage.
