Description

The .45 ACP has stopped bears before—but whether Grandpa’s 1911 is a good grizzly-defense pistol depends far more on the ammunition than the caliber stamped on the slide. This video compares standard ball, defensive hollow points, heavy hard-cast loads, and 10mm against one question: can the bullet penetrate deeply enough, run reliably, and be delivered fast under pressure? For black bears, a proven 1911 loaded with hard-cast ammunition can be workable. Against a charging grizzly, the margin becomes much thinner. Capacity is limited, hits matter enormously, and real cases show bears may keep moving even after multiple rounds. The conclusion isn’t that the old 1911 is useless. It’s that in grizzly country, bear spray should be the primary defense, with the handgun treated as backup.
