Description

Doctors are finally saying out loud what patients have been complaining about for years: American healthcare can feel stacked against the people who actually need care. In this episode of Everyday Perspective, host Kayla looks at what physicians and healthcare workers are describing from inside the system — insurance companies delaying surgeries, prior authorization blocking medication, overloaded hospitals, basic prescription refills turning into another paid appointment, nonprofit hospitals operating like massive corporations, doctors leaving medicine, and even physicians admitting they’ve lost trust in parts of their own profession. One surgeon says he performed three surgeries and still spent another two and a half hours fighting insurance companies for other patients’ approvals. Another doctor describes waiting weeks for a medication, getting denied, going through prior authorization, and still paying $150 out of pocket. And the research behind some of these complaints is hard to ignore. The American Medical Association reports that 95% of physicians surveyed say prior authorization delays necessary care, while 26% say they have seen it contribute to a serious adverse event. In 2026, KFF found that average monthly ACA Marketplace premium payments rose 58%, from $113 to $178. CBO also estimates Medicaid changes will increase the number of Americans without health insurance by 7.5 million in 2034. And in an April 2026 KFF poll, 64% of U.S. adults said they were worried about being able to afford healthcare costs, including 30% who were very worried. The doctors in this episode do not agree on everything. Some strongly criticize insurers, hospitals or government policy, while host Kayla pushes back when the conversation crosses into judging patients or healthcare workers based on politics. The bigger question is simpler: If patients feel trapped by the system, and now doctors inside that same system are openly describing the same dysfunction, who is American healthcare actually working for? If you’ve dealt with denied care, prior authorization, impossible medical bills, medication delays, ER wait times, or another healthcare nightmare, share your experience in the comments.
