Description

On the remote islands of Vanuatu, fishing is more than a way to put food on the table. It is a tradition that brings an entire community together. Basile begins in the forest, gathering vines and palm leaves to create an extraordinary fishing trap. By the next morning, more than a hundred men have gathered on the shore. Together, they pull a vine more than a kilometer long out to sea, forming a huge arc before waiting for the falling tide to trap the fish. There are no manufactured nets and few outside resources. The forest provides the materials, the sea provides the food, and generations of knowledge provide the techniques. From the communal catch to the handmade dugout canoes connecting neighboring islands, this is a glimpse into an island culture where fishing, craftsmanship and community remain deeply intertwined.
