🧭📖 Planning a Michigan trip? The Michigan Guide Box has 4 guides: road trips by season, where Michigan eats, lighthouses and landmarks, and where to stay 👉 https://michigan-guide-box.netlify.app/?src=yt-copper
In 1864, Edwin Hulbert found one of the richest copper lodes on earth under the town that became Calumet. He lost his share to Boston investors and died in Rome in 1910. By 1909, the company that grew from his find, Calumet and Hecla, had paid its shareholders more than 110 million dollars.
For decades, Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula was one of the copper capitals of the world. The mining companies built towns, mansions, theaters and churches, and brought in thousands of miners from Cornwall, Finland, Italy, Croatia and French Canada. Then the price of copper fell, and the mines closed one by one.
In this video, we visit 10 Michigan towns the copper barons built or made rich, ranked from the largest town to the smallest, and what is still standing today. The last one has a population of zero.
