Between 1869 and 1900, Michigan cut more lumber than any other state, and the men who owned the mills spent their fortunes on houses: towers, ballrooms, Tiffany glass, and a different kind of wood in every room. Most of those mansions were torn down when the pine ran out. These 10 survived, and you can still walk inside almost all of them today, as museums, inns, restaurants and historic sites.
From a Traverse City mansion saved by a funeral home, to a Muskegon lumber king who started out shoveling sawdust, to a Detroit mansion where you can order a drink in a bar named after the ghost of the man who built it.
