Description

In April 1961, Soviet physician Leonid Rogozov was the only doctor stationed at the isolated Novolazarevskaya research base in Antarctica when he developed severe abdominal pain and quickly realized he had acute appendicitis. With no other surgeon anywhere near the base and no realistic way to evacuate him in time, Rogozov made an extraordinary decision: he would operate on himself. Using local anesthesia to numb his abdominal wall while staying conscious, he began the procedure at 2 AM with a driver and a meteorologist assisting him — handing him instruments and holding a mirror so he could see portions of the incision not directly visible to him. The operation took about two hours, with Rogozov pausing briefly several times as he worked through dizziness and fatigue. He successfully removed his own inflamed appendix, and within a week his stitches were out; by around two weeks later, he had returned to his normal duties at the station. His case remains one of the most remarkable examples of self-surgery in medical history, and a striking illustration of human resilience under extreme isolation. #history #historyfacts #historyshorts #historia #historical #coldwarhistory #sovietunion #medicalhistory #antarctica #survival #truestory #extraordinary #documentary #education #medicine #surgery #resilience #historylovers #fyp #edit #phonk #memes #didyouknow #incredibleindia
