Description
The Beast of Gévaudan remains one of France’s most disturbing historical mysteries. Between 1764 and 1767, a mysterious animal terrorized the Gévaudan region of southern France, killing men, women and children and triggering one of the largest predator hunts of the eighteenth century.
Was the Beast of Gévaudan an unusually aggressive wolf? A pack of wolves? A wolf-dog hybrid? An escaped exotic animal? Or did fear, folklore and newspaper sensationalism transform several real predators into one legendary monster?
In this atmospheric episode of Bedtime Myths & Mysteries, we follow the surviving historical record from the death of Jeanne Boulet in 1764 through the failed hunts, the intervention of King Louis XV, the killing of the famous Wolf of Chazes, and the final hunt involving Jean Chastel in 1767.
We explore the people and events behind the legend, including Marie-Jeanne Valet, Captain Jean-Baptiste Duhamel, the d'Enneval wolf hunters, François Antoine, Jean Chastel and the royal campaign to destroy the creature that had embarrassed an entire kingdom.
The fatal attacks, royal intervention and killing of large wolves are part of the historical record. Stories involving supernatural monsters, armour, trained hybrids and silver bullets belong largely to later legend or remain disputed.
So what really hunted the people of Gévaudan?
A giant wolf?
Several predators?
Something exotic?
Or a real tragedy transformed into an immortal monster by fear and storytelling?
Come closer to the fire and discover the mystery of the Beast of Gévaudan.
