Description
Two major storm systems brought dangerous flooding to Arizona and Texas during the week of October 11–16, 2026, as tropical moisture triggered intense rainfall across normally dry landscapes. In Arizona, floodwaters swept away a Jeep near Mohave Wash, stranded two men near Topock, and trapped 65 campers behind a flooded bridge in Oak Creek Canyon. In West Texas, a powerful microburst dropped a building into an Odessa street, a tornado damaged Fort Stockton, and life-threatening flash flooding struck Midland.
The storms were fueled by the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel and moisture from Hurricane Simon, which combined with other weather systems to produce repeated rounds of heavy rain. While Arizona’s immediate flood emergency gave way to a powerful wind threat near Tucson, floodwaters in Texas continued draining into rivers. The Middle Wichita River broke its previous record near Guthrie, while the Rio Grande and other waterways were forecast to reach dangerous levels, threatening campsites, roads, livestock and oil and gas facilities.
In this video, we compare the Arizona and Texas disasters, explain why tropical moisture can turn desert storms into dangerous flood events, and follow the rising rivers from the Rolling Plains to Big Bend National Park. We also examine the record-setting river forecasts and the threats that remained on Friday, October 16.
Confirmed casualty and missing-person figures are pinned in the comments and updated as official numbers change.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
